OpenAI's Decisions API Is Now Live for Everyone — and It Was Built to Catch a Startup

Image
Most AI answers arrive as essays. OpenAI's new Decisions API doesn't write a word — it answers yes or no, picks from your categories, or scores on your rubric, in 100 to 180 milliseconds. It went generally available this week, and the backstory is the best part: OpenAI's own product lead, Nikunj Handa, reportedly admitted the product wasn't on the roadmap four weeks ago. A small startup forced the sprint. Yes or no, in 100 milliseconds The API runs on GPT-6 Luna. Developers send text or images plus typed questions and get machine-readable answers in three shapes: a probability that a condition is true, a pick from a fixed list with a probability for each, or a score on rubric levels you define. Input costs $0.10 per million tokens, and output tokens are free. It launched as a public beta on October 6 (after a limited DevDay preview in late September), and the general release adds voice and visual input plus geographically targeted inference. Replit Dumps Anthropic for OpenAI: ChatGPT Is Now the Default Behind Replit Agent

Replit just made one of the boldest model swaps in the AI coding wars. Speaking onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt on October 15, 2026, CEO Amjad Masad said the company is "no longer working with Anthropic." Over the weekend, he clarified what that means in practice: OpenAI's ChatGPT is now the default model powering Replit Agent.

What actually changed

According to Masad, OpenAI is now Replit's "preferred partner for powering Replit Agent, based on performance, economics, and the strength of our partnership." Anthropic's Claude models are still selectable inside Replit Agent, and Masad insists "Replit remains model agnostic." But the default slot — the one most users never touch — now belongs to ChatGPT.

Why Replit made the switch

Masad gave three reasons: cost, partnership, and performance. On cost, he was blunt, writing on X on October 17 that "OpenAI models are generally more affordable." On performance, he said Replit's internal VBench benchmark plus a public benchmark show OpenAI's GPT-6 Sol and Astra models "perform better on building vibe-coded applications from scratch." His summary: "I think ChatGPT is better now."

The nuance: Claude isn't gone

A person familiar with the relationship disputed that it ended, saying the partnership is still in place — and the paper trail backs up a softer landing. A late-September Replit blog listed Claude Fable 5 and 5.1 in production, and the October 16 changelog added Claude Haiku 5.5 in Power Mode for Core and Pro users. The accurate summary: OpenAI won the default slot and the "preferred partner" title; Claude stays on the menu.

Why it matters

Replit was, until recently, one of Anthropic's top-five customers. Since most users never change the default model, this switch could significantly cut Replit's spending with Anthropic — and redirect it to OpenAI. In the model wars, defaults are destiny: whoever owns the default owns the usage, the spend, and the feedback loop. Replit announced its OpenAI partnership back in August 2026, but nothing public had suggested the Anthropic relationship was ending, which makes the abruptness of this move its own signal.

Our take

This is less a breakup than a demotion with very expensive consequences. Anthropic keeps a seat at the table, but OpenAI now sets the menu — and in AI coding, the default model is the product

Anthropic just gave Claude two new models
