AI Tools Every Roofer Should Use in 2026

Image
Roofing used to be ladders, tape measures, and missed calls while you were up on a roof. In 2026, a lot of that work happens before anyone climbs anything — satellites and drones measure the roof, AI answers the phone while you're on a job, and software writes the estimate. Here are the tools working roofers actually use, job by job. Measure the Roof Without Climbing It Roofr turns satellite images into a full measurement report, and its Starter plan is free  — you only pay $13 to $19 per report. EagleView does the same job with aerial imagery and property data, with reports starting around $18. Hover takes a different route: snap photos of the house with your phone and it builds a measured 3D model, with projects from $29 to $69 and the first three free. Any of the three beats a tape measure on a 40-degree slope, and the report doubles as the number your estimate is built on. Run the Whole Job From One Screen Once the estimate is done, AccuLynx and JobNimbus take over — lead...

AI Just Edited Another AI's Brain — MIT's Weight-Space Programming Breakthrough

MIT CSAIL researchers have published "Sparks of Weight-Space Programming" on Nov 2, 2026, and the result reads like science fiction made practical. They gave OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra the weights of Alibaba's small open-weight model Qwen3.5-0.8B and asked it to improve its math — by editing the numbers directly, not by training it.

What happened

Astra changed just 0.016% of the model's weights (131,072 of about 800 million), targeting a faulty direction in layers 15 and 19 that made the small model loop endlessly. The results were striking: MATH-500 rose from 7.9% to 48.1% (about 6x), GSM8K from 13.8% to 67.1%, and instruction-following (IFEval) from 21.0% to 62.3%. Answers hitting the token limit fell from 93% to 33.1%. There was no gradient descent and no retraining run — the model read and rewrote weights like code

Why it matters

If frontier models can inspect and patch other models' weights, debugging, auditing for hidden backdoors, and fixing broken behaviour could get far cheaper and faster. The team also had Astra write a Breakout game policy network from scratch, zero-shot. They are building a benchmark and harness for weight-space programming next. For AAI agents that must work reliably, a model that can open up another model and repair it could change how systems are maintained.

The honest caveat

Critics, including developers who reran the edited model within a day, argue the gain was mostly a bug-fix — the small model was looping, and a simpler fix matched much of the gain in one independent test. On a Gemma model that rarely looped, Astra's edits barely moved the score. So this is a promising debugging demo, not proof that AI can now teach other AI new knowledge from scratch. Also note the run took 20.3 hours and 80 Python executions — not yet a one-click tool.
Still, "AI that debugs AI" is a real shift in how we think about improving models — the next breakthroughs may come from models that can open up other models and fix them.
