I Quit Google for a Week — AI Search Only. Here's What Happened

Cover illustration of quitting Google for AI search appsFor one full week, I stopped typing into the Google search box. Every question I had — big, small, dumb — went to an AI instead: Perplexity, ChatGPT, or Gemini. All three are free to start (Perplexity's free plan gives unlimited basic searches with a handful of advanced ones per day; ChatGPT and Gemini both include web search in their free tiers).

Here is the honest verdict.

Where AI search wins

For "why" and "explain" questions, it is not even close. Google hands you ten blue links and a homework assignment. AI search reads those pages and hands you the answer — with its sources listed underneath so you can check its work. Comparison questions ("should I get this laptop or that one?"), how-tos, and research starting points all felt faster. Perplexity was the standout here: every claim comes with clickable citations, which makes verifying things almost fun.

Where it breaks

Fresh news. Anything that happened in the last few hours — a score, a product launch, a price drop — is where AI search stumbles. They all search the live web now, but they can still stitch an answer from stale pages and sound completely confident about it. One independent study found nearly 1 in 10 Google AI answers contains errors (Google disputes the methodology, but the caution applies to every AI search tool). Hyper-specific facts — model numbers, dosages, legal fine print — need a second source. Always.

The rules I kept

Three habits made the week work. First, ask in full sentences, not keywords — AI search rewards talking like you'd ask a person. Second, click at least one citation per answer; the sources are the feature, use them. Third, follow up. "Explain it simpler" or "now argue the opposite side" is the part Google can never do.

 AiPost's take

I am not going back to Google-only. But I am not going Google-free either. AI search is now my first stop for understanding something; Google — or a second AI tool — is my check for anything that actually matters. The week did not convert me. It gave me a better workflow.
