OpenAI's Decisions API Is Now Live for Everyone — and It Was Built to Catch a Startup

Image
Most AI answers arrive as essays. OpenAI's new Decisions API doesn't write a word — it answers yes or no, picks from your categories, or scores on your rubric, in 100 to 180 milliseconds. It went generally available this week, and the backstory is the best part: OpenAI's own product lead, Nikunj Handa, reportedly admitted the product wasn't on the roadmap four weeks ago. A small startup forced the sprint. Yes or no, in 100 milliseconds The API runs on GPT-6 Luna. Developers send text or images plus typed questions and get machine-readable answers in three shapes: a probability that a condition is true, a pick from a fixed list with a probability for each, or a score on rubric levels you define. Input costs $0.10 per million tokens, and output tokens are free. It launched as a public beta on October 6 (after a limited DevDay preview in late September), and the general release adds voice and visual input plus geographically targeted inference. I Let AI Write My Cold Emails for a Week — Here's What Happened

Robot typing cold emails on a giant glowing envelope, titled AI Wrote My Cold Emails, Here's What Happened

I write cold emails the way most people floss — I know I should, I just don't. So last week I handed the whole job to AI: one goal, 200 prospects, seven days, zero human-written emails. Here's the honest

The stack: free brain, cheap polish, serious sending

For the words, I used ChatGPT — the free tier does the job (Plus is $20 a month if you want the faster models). For making the words not sound like a robot, Lavender: its Starter plan is $27 a month billed annually, and it scores every line for tone and readability while you type, like a coach looking over your shoulder. For actually sending at scale, Instantly: the Growth plan is $47 a month ($37.60 on annual billing) with unlimited mailboxes and unlimited warmup, so fresh inboxes get warmed up before a single prospect ever sees them.
 What actually worked

Speed, mostly. Drafting 200 personalized openers took an afternoon instead of a week. Lavender's tone scores caught my worst habits — old emails I'd written myself read like ransom notes next to the AI-polished versions. And the unglamorous hero: warmup. Instantly's unlimited warmup kept deliverability healthy the whole week, because the best AI copy in the world means nothing if your domain lands in spam. If you're new to AI roundup of the best AI email assistants  in general, a good place to start.

What flopped (and cost real money)

AI can't fix a bad list. One stale import bounced over 3% and nearly torched a sending domain — no copywriter, human or AI, survives bad data. And the sticker prices lie: Instantly's $47 headline covers sending only; the lead database and CRM are separate products, and the full stack runs closer to $131 a month on monthly billing. Budget the whole stack, not the headline. Also: always send one test to yourself first. Mid-week the AI signed an email with a prospect's competitor's name. I caught it. Barely.

My take after 7 days

AI is a great junior copywriter and a terrible unsupervised intern. Let it draft, let it score, let it warm your inboxes — but a human still owns the list, the final read, and the send button. This exact trio (ChatGPT + Lavender + Instantly) costs under $75 a month to start, and Instantly offers a 14-day free trial if you want to test the waters. And if you'd rather have AI argue with companies on your behalf than sell to strangers.
