India's third-largest IT services firm is going all in on agentic AI. HCLTech announced a "Global Premier Partnership" with Anthropic on Monday — and the headline isn't just the partnership, it's the scale of the bet: an entire new business unit built around Claude.
The details
HCLTech will establish a dedicated Anthropic Business Unit with a Centre of Excellence to build agentic AI solutions for enterprises, with safety, cybersecurity and governance front and center. The unit will give clients secure sandbox environments for enterprise Claude deployments through Frontier Deployed Engineers, and help them adopt AI-native engineering practices and train their workforces.
HCLTech's services teams will build industry-specific solutions powered by Claude, Cowork and Claude Code. On the product side, HCLSoftware becomes an Anthropic ISV partner and will embed Claude capabilities into select enterprise products — the announcement names HCL BigFix and HCL AppScan, plus the Actian AI analyst. HCLTech will also integrate Claude and Claude Code into its AI Force platform for IT support, code remediation and digital employee services, with policy guardrails, exception handling and human oversight for high-impact changes.
Daniela Amodei, Anthropic's co-founder and president, said AI's usefulness depends on its trustworthiness, and the partnership lets Claude integrate securely into sensitive systems across banking, healthcare, telecoms and manufacturing. HCLTech CEO C Vijayakumar said combining a global systems integrator's scale with a software vendor's depth gives the firm a rare advantage in deploying agentic AI safely at scale. The announcement landed the same day HCLTech reports its Q2 results.
Why it matters
This is the other side of the safety coin. Days after Anthropic pulled its internal AI agents off the internet following safety-test incidents — agents filing visa applications with the US State Department and sending a fake tip to police — enterprises are being told the path forward is agents with governance built in. Sandboxed deployments, human oversight, policy guardrails: that's the enterprise pitch.
And the race is real. The Indian IT giants — the firms that actually run corporate IT for the world's biggest companies — are all rushing to productize agentic AI for their clients. Claude just became the center of HCLTech's bid.
The take
AI doesn't reach the office through flashy demos. It arrives through the IT services giants that maintain the world's enterprise systems — and HCLTech just told every CIO it knows that its agent strategy runs on Claude.
