Most spam filters judge one message at a time. Enhanced Protection looks at the whole conversation with an unknown sender, so it can spot the slow build of a con — the friendly opener, the trust-building, the sudden urgent ask. It also catches scams that don't follow a familiar script, because Gemini is judging patterns, not matching a blocklist.
The conversation analysis runs on Google's cloud Gemini models through a system called Private AI Compute. Google says message data is encrypted and processed in a sealed-off environment that even Google can't access. That claim matters: a scam filter that reads your texts is only acceptable if the reading stays private.
The second half of the update targets links. On supported phones, the on-device Gemini Nano model checks unfamiliar links using live web information, so it can flag brand-new scam sites that haven't made it onto any blocklist yet. You'll also see clearer warnings when someone outside your contacts sends you a link. Smart link checking works on the Pixel 10 series and newer, the Samsung Galaxy S26 lineup, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8. The conversation-based scam detection reaches wider: Pixel 6 and later and Galaxy S24 and later. Gemini already calls businesses for you.
Enhanced Protection is opt-in — it won't switch itself on. Once it reaches your phone, open Google Messages, tap your profile picture, go to Messages settings, then Protection and safety, and select Spam and scam protection. You'll see three options: Enhanced Protection, Standard Protection (the default), and No Protection. Google hasn't said when it reaches India yet — and given how common delivery, KYC and bill-payment scams are there, Indian users stand to gain the most once it arrives.
The scam economy runs on trust built one message at a time, so a filter that reads one message at a time was always going to lose. Judging the whole conversation is the first filter design that actually matches how scams work — part of the same shift toward proactive AI agents). Until it reaches your phone, the old rule still stands: never share an OTP or tap a link from a number you don't know.
