Most image models turn a prompt straight into pixels. Craft splits the job in two. First, a planning model reads your prompt and writes a detailed composition plan — what goes in the picture, where each element sits, how big it is, what matters most, and any text that needs to appear. Then a second model renders the image from that plan at up to 2K resolution, in more than 30 aspect ratios or a custom size.
The secret is the training data. Instead of photographs, Canva trained Craft on millions of human-designed templates from its own library — posters, social posts, presentations, infographics, menus, typography-heavy layouts. That means the model understands design structure: spatial relationships, visual hierarchy, and — the holy grail — legible text. Canva says Craft can render text into images in 55 languages, and you can even write your prompt in any language.
Because the output is design-aware, you can make targeted edits to one element without redrawing everything else. And with Canva's Magic Layers, a Craft image can be split into editable layers you can move around like any other Canva design.
Craft is live right now in Canva's Dream Lab tab for all users globally, within your AI allowance. Canva also plans to open it through the public Canva API and, via its MCP connector, bring image generation into third-party chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini.
The timing makes sense: Canva has been paying third-party image-model bills for years, and higher-than-expected AI costs earlier in 2026 forced it to cut its revenue growth target from 30% to 20%. Owning the model stack cuts those API costs and gives Canva tighter control over quality and speed.
Leonardo.ai — the AI media startup Canva acquired in 2024 — contributed researchers to the project, and two cheaper variants, Craftfast and Craft-ultrafast, are already in the pipeline.
Craft isn't trying to beat photorealism champs at their own game — it's the first major image model designed around posters, presentations, and social graphics, the work people actually do every day in design tools. Canva and Gamma are the two most popular AI design tools right now.
