Apple's 'Welcome Home' Event: Its First Smart-Home Display Powered by Siri AI

Apple Welcome Home event illustration — smart home devices, titled Apple's First Smart Home Push

Apple logoToday is the day Apple finally walks back into your living room.

Apple's "Welcome Home" event — officially announced on October 8 — is expected to unveil the company's first dedicated smart-home display, built from the ground up around the new Siri AI. It's Apple's first coordinated home push in years, and it's the first real test of whether the rebuilt Siri can carry an entire product.

The star of the show is a brand-new device, not a refresh. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, it comes in two versions — a countertop model (internally J490) and a wall-mounted one (J491). The countertop version reportedly has a roughly 6-inch square display mounted on a half-dome speaker base, running a brand-new operating system based on tvOS. The interface is said to blend elements of tvOS, watchOS, and iOS: icons, widgets, apps, and customizable clock faces.

Voice is the main interaction — and Siri AI is the whole point. Apple has spent the past year rebuilding its assistant, which entered beta on existing devices in September. This hub would be the first device designed specifically for it.

It also reportedly gets personal. A camera and presence sensor can identify who's looking at the display, showing personalized information for each household member. The interface is said to resize its elements as you approach or move away.

Beyond the hub, expect FaceTime videoconferencing, home-security monitoring, and an intercom system that works across households with multiple Apple home devices. Pricing is rumored at around $350.

Also expected: a refreshed HomePod mini — new colors including green and pink, a new N1 networking chip, and a faster S-series processor to support Siri AI. And a new Apple TV 4K with an A19 chip, a RAM upgrade, and an upgraded Siri Remote. There's even talk of an OLED iPad mini showing up.

Why does it matter? Apple is arriving years late — Amazon and Google have shipped multiple generations of smart displays. Differentiation has to come from Siri AI, Apple silicon, and tight Home app integration, plus Apple's privacy pitch for a device with a camera in your kitchen.

My take: the smart home is where a great assistant matters most — timers, music, lights, cameras. If Siri is genuinely useful on this hub, Apple owns the premium end of the market. If it still fumbles basic tasks, it's a $350 clock with a camera. Today's event will tell us which one it is.
