Anthropic Just Launched Claude Haiku 5.5 — Its Cheapest, Fastest Small Model Yet
Anthropic has completed the Claude 5.5 family. On Wednesday, the company launched Claude Haiku 5.5 — its small, fast model for high-volume work — calling it the cheapest, fastest, and most capable small model it has ever released. With Opus 5.5 out in September and Sonnet 5.5 shipping the week before, Haiku 5.5 is the third and final piece of the lineup, and it lands right as Anthropic gears up for a planned IPO.
Haiku has always been Anthropic's speed demon: the smallest Claude, built for tasks that need to run thousands of times a day without wrecking your budget. Haiku 5.5 is aimed at classification, summarization, and extraction — live customer support, voice agents, in-app assistants, database queries, and context compaction. It can also run as a subagent alongside Sonnet 5.5 or Opus 5.5 on coding jobs.
The upgrades are substantial. The context window jumps from 200,000 tokens in Haiku 4.5 to 1 million, with up to 128K max output. And for the first time in a Haiku model, there's an adjustable effort setting — developers can dial a request toward lower cost or higher intelligence without switching model tiers.
Anthropic reports big benchmark gains over Haiku 4.5: 72.4% on the OSWorld 2.1 computer-use benchmark (up from 15.7%), 39.2% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 (its predecessor scored zero), 46.4% on FrontierCode 1.1, and 45.9% on Humanity's Last Exam without tools, rising to 57.4% with tools. It's also the first Haiku with built-in safeguards for a narrow set of high-risk cybersecurity requests — Anthropic says most everyday tasks won't be affected.
Here's the headline: Haiku 5.5 costs about 75% less to run than Haiku 4.5 on average. Pricing is tiered by prompt length. For prompts up to 100,000 tokens — which Anthropic says covered around 90% of Haiku 4.5 requests — it's $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output, matching OpenAI's GPT-6 Luna. Over 100,000 tokens, rates step up to $0.50 input and $2.50 output. The same day, Anthropic also halved cache-read pricing on Sonnet 5.5, from $0.20 to $0.10 per million tokens — a quiet but significant cut for anyone running agents at scale.
Haiku 5.5 is live now on the Claude Platform, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure under the model ID claude-haiku-5-5.
The AI price war is the real story here. Haiku 5.5 isn't chasing the frontier — it's making the frontier cheap enough to run everywhere. If your app's AI bill has been the blocker, that excuse just got a lot weaker.
