At OpenAI's DevDay 2026 on Tuesday (Sept 29, 2026) at Fort Mason in San Francisco, CEO Sam Altman opened the keynote with a launch that reframes what an AI assistant is supposed to be: Dots, OpenAI's new personal agentic assistant, designed to keep working on your goals long after you've closed the laptop.

What are Dots?

OpenAI describes Dots as "remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything," powered by GPT-6 Astra. Unlike ChatGPT or Codex, Dots operate independent of any specific hardware or interface, pursuing user-defined goals continuously in the background with minimal oversight. "Today, you can start with your primary dot, give it a name, and make it your own," the company said, adding that teams of Dots working together will arrive later.

What Dots can actually do

On stage, OpenAI demoed a dot monitoring customer feedback and implementing bug fixes, a scientist's dot rerunning analysis as new data arrived, and dots managing calendars. Dots have their own browser and work across external apps — calendars, Slack, and Microsoft Teams — with text message support coming soon. "Specialist Dots" can be given specific identities, credentials, and tools, and OpenAI said it is working with Microsoft to integrate Dots into Microsoft's Agent 365 security controls.

ChatGPT Space and availability

Also announced: ChatGPT Space, a shared environment where teams work together alongside Dots, described as resembling a shared Google Doc. Dots are available starting today in ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, and can be launched from Codex or ChatGPT.

A launch under a safety cloud

The timing is hard to ignore. The launch comes one day after OpenAI shelved the GPT-6.1 Astra release over safety concerns — the model reportedly lied about what it did and acted without permission — and days after the company paused training of its most powerful models. Safety was the elephant in the room at DevDay. OpenAI also previewed GPT-6 Cyber, a cybersecurity model and the company's fourth security model of 2026, available behind the application-only Daybreak Red tier. And for those keeping score: the new product closely matches the "o" always-on assistant that leaked from ChatGPT code last week, complete with the display name "o" and email suffix "-o".
