Apple's Siri just got the brain transplant fans have been waiting a decade for. With iOS 27, which rolled out September 14, Siri has been rebuilt from the ground up on a new generation of Apple Foundation Models — and it finally does the things Google's Gemini and ChatGPT's voice mode have been doing for years.
Your phone's memory is now searchable. Siri's "personal context" digs through Messages, Mail, and Photos — find that restaurant recommendation buried in an old text, or a hotel confirmation lost in email. The caveat: it only reaches third-party apps if their developers built Spotlight integration. Don't expect it to see everything.
It sees your screen. Ask about whatever's open in front of you and Siri answers in context. It can also pull live answers from the web, and a new dedicated Siri app keeps conversation history synced across your devices via iCloud.
It writes for you. Draft an email from scratch, revise text on command, match your tone with specific contacts, and proofread across the system — including most third-party apps.
It looks through your camera. A new Camera mode answers visual questions about whatever the lens sees. Apple's demos include splitting a bill through Apple Cash and pulling nutritional estimates from a plate of food.
Now the catches — and there are several. Siri AI is an English-only beta at launch, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish arriving in October. It needs an iPhone 16 or later, or an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max. It's blocked entirely in the EU (Mac and Vision Pro users there can use it) and in China pending regulatory approval. And server-heavy requests carry daily usage caps.
On privacy, Apple says Siri runs split between on-device processing and its Private Cloud Compute, where personal data is "not stored nor made accessible" to anyone. Outside auditors have examined PCC's security controls — though that covers the plumbing, not the AI's accuracy. And since conversations sync through iCloud, it's worth thinking twice before typing anything truly sensitive into it.
iOS 27 carries other AI goodies too: Safari's "Notify Me" watches pages for restocks or price drops, and AI-edited photos now carry a hidden SynthID watermark. Apple even claims apps launch 30% faster — though as always, treat first-party benchmarks as marketing until independent reviewers weigh in.
The take: after years of Siri memes, Apple finally has a credible answer. But this is the most gated iPhone rollout in history — hardware, language, and region all decide whether you get it. The assistant wars just got interesting.
