OpenAI Just Opened Its Decisions API to Every Developer — 10x Faster AI Answers

OpenAI moved its Decisions API into public beta on October 6, 2026, opening the new endpoint to all developers. The pitch is simple: instead of generating text, the API returns structured answers — a probability, a choice from a predefined set, or a numeric score.

The API lives at POST /v1/decisions and runs on GPT-6 Luna, the reasoning model OpenAI released on September 22. After a limited preview at DevDay 2026 on September 29, it is now in public beta for developers, with a Playground to try questions and inputs before writing any code. General availability is expected in the coming weeks, though OpenAI has not given a date.

The headline number is speed. OpenAI says the endpoint produces decisions up to 10x faster than the Responses API — independent writeups peg typical answers around 150 milliseconds versus roughly 1.6 seconds for a standard GPT-6 Luna call. That matters because the step where a model writes text that then has to be parsed is often the slowest and least reliable part of an LLM app. A fast endpoint that can only return a valid option makes classification and routing genuinely usable in real time.

Three question types are supported. Predicates estimate the probability that a statement is true. Choices select from developer-defined options, returning a probability for each plus a separate confidence score. Scores evaluate an input against a numeric range. Developers supply text or image context, and any question can return a refusal instead of a scored answer.

Pricing is built for volume: $0.10 per million input tokens with gpt-6-luna — and since the API returns a choice instead of prose, there are no output-token charges.

Why it matters: the typical uses — content classification, request routing, and picking an AI agent's next action — are the plumbing of the agentic era. OpenAI now sits in direct competition with specialist decision models like TypeSafe's Jev, which answers in probabilities at lower cost but without OpenAI's developer ecosystem.

The take: chatbots write essays; infrastructure answers questions. With the Decisions API, OpenAI is betting that the most valuable thing AI can do for developers isn't more words — it's a fast, typed yes or no.
